Anzac Day 2026 — Dawn services, marches & memorials
Anzac Day marks 25 April 1915, when Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli under heavy fire. It was the first major military action fought by the Australian Imperial Force, and the losses were catastrophic.
Anzac Day has been observed every year since 1916. It is now Australia's most significant day of national remembrance, marking not just Gallipoli but every conflict in which Australians have served and died. The day follows a consistent structure across the country: a dawn service before sunrise, a commemorative march in the morning, and extended memorial and gallery hours in the afternoon.
In 2026, the standout commemorative milestone is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong. On 22–27 April 1951, the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment held against Chinese forces north of Seoul, losing 32 men. The new Anzac Hall at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra also opens this year — the centrepiece of a $550 million redevelopment and the biggest change to the AWM in a generation.

Attending overseas
Three overseas sites hold official Anzac Day services in 2026: Gallipoli in Türkiye, Villers-Bretonneux in France, and Isurava on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
Both Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux require a free attendance pass. Register at commemorations.teg.com.au well before 25 April. Entry is not permitted without one. The Gallipoli site opens at 10:30pm on 24 April; last entry is 3:00am. The temperature overnight is 8–15°C, there is around 8km of walking, and the terrain is uneven. Bring warm layers and wear appropriate footwear.
The ABC broadcasts both the Canberra and Gallipoli dawn services live, so if you cannot attend in person, you can watch from home.
