What is the difference between incapacity payments and SRDP?

Incapacity payments are earnings-based, taxable, and stop at pension age. They replace the gap between your pre-incapacity earnings and what you currently earn. SRDP (MRCA Special Rate Disability Pension) is a fixed-rate, tax-free payment for life at $947.95 per week (includes Energy Supplement). The key trade-off is that incapacity can pay more for high earners but is temporary, while SRDP pays less but is permanent and tax-free.

Is SRDP better than incapacity payments?

It depends on your pre-service earnings, CSC pension, and how long until pension age. For veterans with high ADF salaries and low CSC pensions, incapacity can pay significantly more per week. But incapacity is taxable and stops at 67. SRDP is tax-free and lifetime. Over a full lifetime, SRDP often wins even when the weekly amount is lower. Financial modelling with your specific numbers is essential.

Can I switch from SRDP back to incapacity payments?

No. Choosing SRDP is a permanent election. Once you opt for SRDP, you cannot switch back to incapacity payments. This is why DVA recommends obtaining financial advice before deciding. The choice has permanent financial consequences that compound over decades.

How does CSC super affect each payment type differently?

CSC invalidity pensions offset incapacity payments dollar-for-dollar (for the Commonwealth-funded portion). For SRDP, the offset is 60 cents per dollar of the Commonwealth-funded portion. TPI under the VEA has different offsetting rules. This means the same CSC pension reduces incapacity by more than it reduces SRDP, which can significantly affect which option is better for you.

Who is eligible for SRDP?

SRDP requires 50 or more impairment points (per MRCA assessment), receipt of MRCA incapacity payments, confirmation from treating specialists that you cannot work more than 10 hours per week, and confirmation that rehabilitation is unlikely to improve your capacity. From 1 July 2026, DRCA veterans can be assessed for SRDP for the first time. SRDP recipients automatically receive a Gold Card with TPI embossing.
