What is SRDP?

The Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP) is the highest ongoing payment available under the MRCA. It is a tax-free, lifetime payment for veterans whose service-related conditions are so severe they cannot work more than 10 hours per week. The current rate is $947.95 per week (includes Energy Supplement). SRDP recipients automatically receive a Gold Card.

Who is eligible for SRDP?

SRDP requires five criteria: (1) you are receiving or eligible for MRCA incapacity payments, (2) you have 50 or more impairment points, (3) your treating specialist confirms you cannot work more than 10 hours per week, (4) rehabilitation is unlikely to improve your work capacity, and (5) you are under Age Pension age. Unlike VEA TPI, there is no "alone test" — the combined effect of all accepted conditions is considered.

How are SRDP offsets calculated?

SRDP is reduced by three offsets in order: (1) MRCA/DRCA PI periodic payments are offset dollar for dollar, (2) VEA DCP payments are offset dollar for dollar, and (3) the Commonwealth-funded portion of your CSC invalidity pension is offset at 60 cents per dollar. Each offset is applied sequentially, and the residual cannot go below zero at any step.

Is SRDP better than incapacity payments?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your circumstances. SRDP is tax-free and lifetime, while incapacity payments are taxable and stop at pension age. SRDP is also exempt from Service Pension income testing. For high earners, incapacity payments may provide more weekly income, but over a lifetime SRDP often wins. The choice is permanent — you cannot switch back. Financial modelling with your specific numbers is essential.

Can I switch back to incapacity after choosing SRDP?

No. Choosing SRDP is a permanent election. Once you accept SRDP, you cannot revert to incapacity payments. This is why DVA recommends obtaining financial and legal advice before deciding. DVA will reimburse up to $3,279.13 for combined financial and legal advice if you have 50+ impairment points.

Does SRDP affect my Service Pension?

SRDP itself is exempt from the Service Pension income test. However, the portion of your CSC pension that is NOT used to offset SRDP IS assessable income for Service Pension purposes. This means your total household income on SRDP plus Service Pension may actually be higher than on incapacity payments plus Service Pension, even if the raw SRDP number appears lower.
