Lawn and garden maintenance

What it is

Regular mowing, edging and basic garden upkeep when your accepted conditions make yard work unsafe or unmanageable.

Who's eligible

  • You have an accepted condition, commonly back, knee, shoulder or cardiovascular, that limits safe outdoor physical work.

  • DVA covers tasks you did before your condition, and considers whether others in your home could reasonably do them (unless that would substantially disrupt their work, or they have their own illness or disability).

How to get it

  1. 1

Lawn and garden maintenance is claimed on the same Claim for Household Services Compensation (form D9319), completed with your GP. Mention the outdoor tasks specifically, some assessments default to indoor tasks unless you raise them.

  2. 2

Lodge with DVA (MyService, HHS@dva.gov.au, or post). An occupational therapist assesses your needs, then DVA determines the service and arranges an approved provider at no cost to you.

  3. 3

Approval typically takes around 3 to 6 months as of 2026. DVA household services line: 1800 555 254.
