DVA Erectile Dysfunction Claims

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is claimable through DVA when caused by service-related physical or psychological conditions. It is commonly a sequela of PTSD, depression, diabetes, or vascular conditions, all of which may have service connections.

This is a condition many veterans are reluctant to raise, but it is a legitimate DVA claim with real compensation entitlements. DVA clinicians handle these claims routinely.

Why Erectile Dysfunction is common in the ADF

Psychological conditions from service, particularly PTSD and depression, are among the most common causes of ED in veterans. Physical causes including vascular disease and metabolic conditions that have service connections also contribute.

Medical access

Provisional Access to Medical Treatment (PAMT)

Erectile Dysfunction is not currently on the PAMT list. However, if your Erectile Dysfunction is related to a mental health condition, you may be eligible for Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) — which provides funded mental health treatment without a liability determination. Speak to your GP about a DVA mental health referral.

Statement of Principles — in plain English

DVA assesses your claim against a Statement of Principles (SoP). Here are the key factors that most commonly apply to Erectile Dysfunction claims, translated from the legal language.

Having PTSD, depression, or anxiety as a contributing cause

Accepted mental health condition documented as contributing to ED

Pelvic or genital injury during service

Physical trauma to the pelvic region or genitalia during service

Conditions that commonly develop alongside

Veterans with Erectile Dysfunction often develop related conditions that may also be claimable. These are worth assessing at the same time as your primary claim.

What to expect for impairment points

ED impairment is assessed based on severity, response to treatment, and the impact on quality of life and relationships.

What a strong Erectile Dysfunction claim looks like

  • Urologist or GP diagnosis

  • Records establishing the service-related causative pathway

  • Treatment history

DVA currently takes 3–6 months to decide most initial liability claims. Complex or multi-condition claims can take longer. Lodging a complete, decision-ready claim upfront reduces back-and-forth.
