DVA IBS Claims

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is claimable through DVA when caused or aggravated by service-related factors. It is frequently associated with PTSD and other service-related mental health conditions, and can be claimed as a sequela of those conditions.

Why Irritable Bowel Syndrome is common in the ADF

Operational stress, traumatic experiences, and the psychological demands of service are recognised triggers for IBS. Veterans with PTSD have significantly elevated rates of IBS compared to the general population.

Medical access

Provisional Access to Medical Treatment (PAMT)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not currently on the PAMT list. However, if your Irritable Bowel Syndrome is related to a mental health condition, you may be eligible for Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) — which provides funded mental health treatment without a liability determination. Speak to your GP about a DVA mental health referral.

Statement of Principles — in plain English

DVA assesses your claim against a Statement of Principles (SoP). Here are the key factors that most commonly apply to Irritable Bowel Syndrome claims, translated from the legal language.

Having PTSD or another anxiety disorder that contributed to IBS onset or worsening

Accepted mental health condition with documented gastrointestinal symptoms

Gastrointestinal infection causing post-infectious IBS

Diagnosed gastrointestinal infection within 1 year before onset

Conditions that commonly develop alongside

Veterans with Irritable Bowel Syndrome often develop related conditions that may also be claimable. These are worth assessing at the same time as your primary claim.

What to expect for impairment points

IBS impairment is assessed based on symptom severity, frequency, and impact on daily functioning and work capacity.

What a strong Irritable Bowel Syndrome claim looks like

  • Gastroenterologist or GP diagnosis

  • Records establishing the connection between IBS and service-related conditions

  • Treatment history documenting symptom severity

DVA currently takes 3–6 months to decide most initial liability claims. Complex or multi-condition claims can take longer. Lodging a complete, decision-ready claim upfront reduces back-and-forth.
