Is there any cost to me?

No. RAP items are fully funded by DVA for eligible Gold and White Card holders. There is no gap or co-payment.

Higher-cost items like adjustable beds are usually supplied through DVA's contracted supplier, so DVA or the supplier retains ownership. You use it for as long as you clinically need it, and you should not sell or give it away without their permission.

What if it breaks or needs servicing?

Contact the supplier who provided it. They collect, repair or replace the item at no cost to you.

Do I need a Gold Card?

No. White Card holders can access an adjustable bed through RAP where it is for an accepted condition and clinically assessed. Gold Card holders can access it for any clinical need.

Adjustable bed

What it is

An electrically adjustable bed that raises the head or leg sections, and often the whole-bed height, prescribed where an accepted condition makes lying flat, or getting in and out of bed, painful or unsafe. It is commonly used for spinal and back conditions, some respiratory and circulation conditions, and severe reflux.

It is funded through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP) at no cost to you. Higher-cost items like beds are usually supplied through a DVA-contracted national supplier, which delivers, sets up, services and repairs the bed for free.

Who's eligible

You have at least one accepted DVA condition, and a GP, occupational therapist, physiotherapist or treating specialist confirms a clinical need for an adjustable bed.
RAP is assessed on your accepted conditions and clinical need, not on your impairment points, so you do not need a particular PI score to qualify.
White Card holders can access RAP where the item is for an accepted condition. Gold Card holders can access it for any clinical need.

How to get it

Ask your GP, treating specialist, occupational therapist or physiotherapist for an assessment against your accepted conditions.

They lodge the request through RAP with their clinical justification, usually after a home or functional assessment for larger items.

Once approved, a DVA-contracted supplier delivers and sets up the bed at no cost to you.
