Household ServicesMeal preparation
What it is
Help preparing meals when your accepted conditions make cooking difficult, painful, or unsafe. This can include prepared meal delivery or in-home meal preparation support.
Who's eligible
You have an accepted condition that limits standing, mobility, grip, concentration, or stamina enough to affect cooking safely.
As with all household services, DVA only covers tasks you were responsible for before your condition, and considers whether others in your home could reasonably do them (unless that would substantially disrupt their work, or they have their own illness or disability).
How to get it
- 1
Meal preparation is claimed on the same Claim for Household Services Compensation (form D9319), completed with your GP. It is usually assessed alongside cleaning and gardening rather than as a separate claim.
- 2
Lodge the form with DVA (MyService, HHS@dva.gov.au, or post). An occupational therapist does an in-home assessment, then DVA issues a determination and arranges the service or reimburses an approved provider.
- 3
Approval typically takes around 3 to 6 months as of 2026. DVA household services line: 1800 555 254.
