DVA Dental Treatment: What's Covered and What's Not

5 April 202610 min read

DVA dental coverage is one of the most misunderstood parts of the system. If you have a Gold Card, you're covered for all clinically necessary dental treatment. If you have a White Card, you're only covered for dental treatment directly related to an accepted condition. If you have neither, DVA doesn't cover your dental costs.

Most veterans don't have a Gold Card. So the question becomes: what dental conditions can be accepted by DVA, and what treatment flows from that?

Gold Card holders

If you have a Gold Card, DVA covers all clinically necessary dental treatment. That includes check-ups, cleans, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, dentures, implants (where clinically necessary), orthodontics (where clinically necessary), and emergency dental. You need to see a dentist who accepts DVA patients. The dentist bills DVA directly. You pay nothing.

White Card holders

If you have a White Card, dental treatment is only covered when it's directly related to an accepted condition listed on your card. In practice, this means you need a specific dental or oral condition accepted by DVA.

Conditions that commonly lead to DVA-funded dental treatment include bruxism (teeth grinding, often linked to PTSD, anxiety, or medication side effects), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, dental trauma from a service-related injury, and oral conditions secondary to medication for accepted mental health conditions.

Bruxism as a pathway

Bruxism is worth flagging specifically because it's commonly connected to PTSD, anxiety, and antidepressant use. If you have an accepted mental health condition and you're grinding your teeth, bruxism may be claimable as a secondary condition.

The Statement of Principles for bruxism (SoP 64/2016 under reasonable hypothesis, SoP 65/2016 under balance of probabilities) includes factors for clinical onset in the presence of a disorder of mental health from the specified list (which includes PTSD, anxiety, and depressive disorders) and for the use of a drug from the specified list (which includes SSRIs and SNRIs commonly prescribed for mental health conditions).

If bruxism is accepted, DVA covers treatment including occlusal splints (night guards), dental repair for damaged teeth, TMJ treatment, and ongoing dental monitoring.

Medications and RPBS

DVA covers prescription medications through the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS) for accepted conditions. If your GP or dentist prescribes medication related to an accepted dental or oral condition, the RPBS co-payment applies rather than the standard PBS rate. Show your White or Gold Card at the pharmacy every time.

What to do if you think your dental issues are service-related

Start with your GP. If your dental problems are connected to an accepted condition (particularly if you have accepted PTSD, anxiety, or depression and you're experiencing bruxism), your GP can document the connection and support a liability claim for the dental condition. If the dental condition is accepted, DVA will cover treatment through a DVA-registered dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Does DVA cover dental implants?

For Gold Card holders, yes, where clinically necessary. For White Card holders, only if the dental condition requiring implants is an accepted condition. DVA assesses clinical necessity, so purely cosmetic implants aren't covered even with a Gold Card.

Can I claim bruxism if I take antidepressants for PTSD?

Yes. The bruxism SoP includes a factor for drug use from a specified list, which includes SSRIs and SNRIs. If your bruxism developed after starting medication for an accepted mental health condition, the claim pathway is straightforward.

Do I need prior approval for dental treatment?

For some treatments, yes. Routine treatments for accepted conditions generally don't need approval. More complex procedures (implants, extensive restorative work) typically do. Your dentist or DVA can advise which treatments require prior approval.

Can I see any dentist?

You can see any dentist who accepts DVA patients. Not all dentists are registered with DVA. Check with the practice before booking. DVA maintains a provider directory, or you can call 1800 838 372 for help finding a dentist in your area.

What if I need emergency dental treatment?

If you have a Gold Card, emergency dental treatment is covered. If you have a White Card, emergency treatment is covered only if the emergency relates to an accepted condition. In a genuine emergency, get treated and sort the DVA billing afterward.
